Quote of the Week

Socrates

If a man comes to the door of poetry untouched by the madness of the Muses, believing that technique alone will make him a good poet, he and his sane compositions never reach perfections, but are utterly eclipsed by the performance of the inspired madman.

{Socrates, in Plato’s Phaedrus and Letters VII and VII}

            Roberta Rominger

Cabot la Nao, Spain

                      URC Gen Sec

Roberta Rominger is married to Dale and is the first American to hold the post of General Secretary in the United Reformed Church. She blames it all on her parents. Not only was her family first to arrive at church every Sunday and last to leave (her parents, between them, held every office and committee post there was as she was growing up) but Sunday nights would be spent in front of the television imbibing British indoctrination: Lord Peter Wimsey, Poldark, Upstairs Downstairs. She escaped briefly to study music at university but then accepted her destiny, training for ministry and almost immediately applying for service in the United Reformed Church. She served churches in Woking and Newcastle upon Tyne and then was Moderator of the Thames North Synod for 10 years, becoming General Secretary in 2008. She still escapes to play her cello at every possible opportunity.
